In the 2007 versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint we have a new feature called the Document Information Panel (or DIP). The standard panel is a new way to present the document properties that were there in previous version. Even this is a great step forward, because I think people used to ignore document properties to some extent when they were hidden somewhere off the file menu.
You can make sure the standard DIP is always shown when you open a document, and when you're about to save it, as follows...
Click the Developer tab in the ribbon and click on Document Panel. Towards the bottom of the DIP dialog box you should check the "Always show Document Information Panel on document open and initial save" checkbox.
So this is a useful step forward, but it gets a lot more interesting when we start to talk about Custom DIPs. I'll start to cover those in my next post.
Incidentally, I demo custom DIPs as part of our 2007 MSDN Roadshow, so if you've attended one of those and want to know how to set one of these things up for yourself, please go to my next post.
